Make yourself at Home

“Mi Casa es su casa” is a saying that my brother, Allen would reverse.  “Your home is my home,” is how he would say it.  My mother-in-law, Bea lived within walking distance and I would often visit. 

 

She related that one day, my brother came by to see if Jerry and Billy were home.  He walked into the kitchen and spying a couple of left over home made biscuits he picked up one of her biscuits and began to eat it. 

Bea was courteous, but was mildly shocked because she barely knew Allen, and this surprised her when he made himself right at home.  She laughed when telling me this story.

Remembering back to my childhood - -

 

I grew up in the days before TV and electronic gadgets. (The olden days say my kids.)

At home we did have a radio and always enjoyed the radio shows.  Some were daily and others were once a week.  I would run home from school to listen to Little Orphan Annie, Jack Armstrong and other favorites.

Twice a year we visited my grandparents, and there was less to play with at their home. 

Grandma did have a few books, but not near enough for me.  I was used to visiting the library and checking out 5 at a time.  I brought my own puzzle and color books from home, and we did have an orchard to explore and climb trees.  Grandma didn’t even have a cat or dog for us to play with. The only animals were chickens in a coop and I could help gather the eggs.  One wonderful thing that Grandma did was to make us real biscuits for breakfast and she also made us sugar cookies. Yum.

When Grandpa irrigated his orchard, we were allowed to get wet in the weir that collected the water before it went to the orchard.

For entertainment my grandma had one of those Stereoscopes you look through and you would see 3D with two identical photos you would place at the end of the scope.  That was a part of our world on our twice a year visit to Grandma and Grandpa’s ranch.

My mother taught me many things, and I often share how she encouraged me to be careful of saying harsh remarks.   I must also be careful what I write.  Even when our story is not so pretty, we can still profit and be encouraged by sharing.  This is where we can come with open face and know we are accepted.

True Stories Week 44

When we were kids, I had a play tea set and my girl friend Gracie and I would enjoy our lunch at the table my daddy made for me.  Mother would make us real tea to go with our sandwich and cookies.  It was such fun to pretend we were fine ladies!

 

What interesting events are happening in your neighborhood, family, church or work place?
