Accounting Error

My friend called me and asked if I would like a temporary job where she worked.

She said, “They need some simple research done, and with your math expertise, you would be a good choice.”

“Sure,” I told her, “Give me directions how to get there, and when to show up.”

This was a strange request, but I could understand that my friend was occupied doing her own job and the Senior Accounts Payable person was busy and did not have time to research what they wanted me to do.

The Senior Accountant handed me last months account records, and told me the balance was off by ten cents, and I was hired to find it and correct it.

My question was, “Why not cover a ten cent error with an accounting adjustment and let it go?”

The accountant in no uncertain terms said, “We can’t do that.  You must find the error and fix it properly.”

I could see that I was dealing with a perfectionist, so there was no arguing about it.  You can’t treat a business the same way we often treat our personal check book balances.

Carefully I set out to audit last months accounts, and I found them to be perfect.  I was told to go over them again until I found the error.  After being there for four days, I finally made a request that I be given the account records for the previous month.

The accountant told me that she had already gone over them, and they were fine.

Almost begging her I asked, “Please let me have a look.”  Finally she relented and retrieved the prior month’s records.

Whispering a prayer for help, I set out to find the error.  God was gracious and it did not take me very long, and there it was - - big as you please, or should I say small as you please the ten cents worth of error.

In life there are times, when it is easier to sluff off the small stuff and try to let it go, and other times there is a need to search for the error and make a hard call to fix it correctly.

I am thankful that God has one book with our name in it, and all the other evidence against us has been washed away and our record has been made clean.

Learning by Example

When I was a child growing up, my mother always told me, Hazel, you are the oldest, so you must be an example to the other children.

When I received Jesus as my Savior, she then told me, Hazel others will be watching you to see how you act, and behave, so be a good example for them.  Remember you are the Best Christian that someone knows!!

I later learned that I did not need to experience the consequences of walking in the ways of the world.  I could learn from the example of others, and steer clear of those things that could harm me, and take the proper path of life.

As we read and study the Bible, we can learn many things by example to help us in our Christian walk; such as what to avoid and who to follow.

1Corinthians 10:11  Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

1 Timothy 4:12 Be an example of the believers, in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

Philippians chapter 3: Brethren, join in following my example and observe those who walk according to the pattern you have in us.

And who is our great example?  The answer is clear; it is our Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus said in John l3:15, For I have given you an example that you should do as I have done to you.

Many examples in the Bible are written for our learning experience.  They were given for our instruction and to serve as a case in point to show us the best way to live.  Jesus said, “If you know these things, blessed are you, if you do them.”

Yes, we certainly can learn from the examples of others, and then we become an example, for good, so that others may learn from us.

We prefer to shut our eyes and ears when we hear reports of Christians being killed because of their faith.

We think to ourselves, “It can’t happen here,” - - but the truth is that it can, even as various hate groups grow bolder in their abhorrence of Christians and of Christ Jesus.

May we cry out; “Oh Lord, open my eyes that I might see.”

And then, “Open my ears so I may hear.

What is the next thing that you desire me to do?”

May we pray, “Here are my hands and feet - - where would you like me to go, what would you have me do?”

A True Story from my book Rescue the Stories Book One

A Bowl of Beans

When I was quite young, we lived a city block away from the Rail road trains.  I loved to run down to the corner and wave at the engineer.  They always waved back and blew their loud whistle.

There were men who rode the freight trains trying to get to a different city perhaps to return to their home, or they might be looking for work.  We called them Hobo’s.  I suppose today we would call them homeless men.

One day, there was a knock at our back door and a clean man, neatly dressed in a suit told my dad that he was down on his luck and was hungry.  He asked if he could do some work for us in exchange for some food.  My dad took one look at him and invited him to come in and sit at our kitchen table.

A big pot of red beans was cooking on the stove and that was to be our dinner.  However mother always cooked plenty so there could be some left over if anyone was hungry later.

Mother had just removed a huge pan of corn bread from the oven and she began to slice a large portion for our guest.  Our kitchen must have smelled like heaven to that dear man!

Dad scooped up a big bowl of the steaming beans and set it before our visitor.

It was evident that this gentleman was telling the truth that he was hungry, because he ate those beans and corn bread with a vengeance.  I can remember as a small child, watching him and thinking that I was glad he came to our house.

This was not the first man who had knocked on our door and probably wasn’t the last one either, but my parents always fed whoever requested something to eat.  They did not require them to work for it or to pay them money.   For the hungry person it was FREE.

I am reminded that this is just like our Lord?  When our spirits are hungry for God, He gives to us freely because Jesus has already paid for our salvation by his death, burial and resurrection.  It is up to us to receive what He has provided for us.

I am also reminded that the Bible tells us that when we give to those in need, that we are giving as unto the Lord.  It is the same as if we were presenting gifts directly unto Jesus.

In another scripture, it says, that some have entertained angels unawares!!

Wow that truly is an amazing thought!!

I suppose that we will never know on this earth, if we have actually entertained an angel, but one day those secrets will be revealed to us when we arrive in heaven.

In the mean time, as you have opportunity, do good unto all persons.

Spit Bath

Although I was very young probably no older than four years, I remember the old large galvanized laundry tub sitting on our kitchen floor.

Mother had filled it half full with water and then she added some hot water she had boiled on the stove to warm it up a bit.  This was our Saturday night bath, and my Dad was first.  I do not remember him getting in or out, but the memory of him sitting there with mother washing his back was vivid.

Our house did have inside water, but no bathroom, instead we had what you might call a path to a standing outhouse on the alley.  We were poor, but better off than some.

When I was five years old we moved from Exeter to Oakland because my dad had secured work on the Railroad as a switchman.  Times were better!  We now had a bathroom, several bed rooms, and I enjoyed my own bed.

Each night as we prepared for bed, mother would fill a small basin with warm water and we lined up for our “bath” of sorts.  Standing at the kitchen sink, mother would lather up the “wash rag” and scrub our neck, face and arms.  Then she would give us a quick rinse with another “rag,” and a small towel finished us and it was off to bed.

Although we conserved everything, water included, we did get our weekly Saturday night bath.  We did not swim in a full tub, but the water line was maybe 2 inches deep.  Enough for us to sit and allow mother to give us a shampoo with bar soap and a rinse with a glass of water with a bit of vinegar.

Now we were clean enough to wear our Sunday best for church the next day.

Arriving at church, Mother would give us a quick once over look.  I hated this part, because crystal-clear in my memory was the garish look in her eye as she inspected our faces.  Usually she would open her purse and pull out her cotton hanky and wet it with a bit of spit.

I would close my eyes in a tight squint as she gave me the final “spit bath” prior to us entering the church sanctuary.

I am reminded that the Bible says that when we come to Jesus that he will bathe away all the spots of sin and we will become wrinkle free and shine like the sun.

Jesus said in another place that there are times when our feet come in contact with the world, and have become soiled with earthly dust, it is needful that only our feet be washed.

Jesus was saying that although we are a Christian, and are clean, we may need that touch up “Spit bath.”

Although I hated it when mother gave me a spit bath, may I ever be ready to say, “Oh Jesus go ahead and Spit on me.”

My Cousin had a mean streak!
Defend Yourself

While job and house hunting in the 1940’s, my aunt and uncle, along with their two children moved in with us for a few weeks.

My girl cousin was full of energy accompanied by a mean streak! She would run, take a flying leap and jump on my brother’s back with her legs locked around his waist.  Then, with fists flailing, she pounded on his back until he would cry for help.

Our aunt did not reprimand or punish her.  In fact, my aunt thought it was funny!  Because my brother had been taught not to hit girls, he was defenseless against her!  Finally, in desperation, I took him aside and reasoned with him.  We agreed that, in this case, he had a perfect right to defend himself.

The next time she pulled this stunt, my brother unexpectedly sat down, rolled over backwards, flipped upright, and held her down until she cried for help.  She never tried that again, at least not in our household.

Do you ever feel like life is jumping on YOUR back and giving you a good thrashing?

Let me tell you that you have a right to defend yourself.  The Bible tells us in the book of James, (first step) to draw near to God and He will draw near to us.

The second step is to resist the devil (and his problems that seem to throw themselves at you) and he will flee from you.

Drawing near to God is a preventative measure!  You can actually avoid the thrashing that will roll off your back as you resist.

Then, it may just be time to stand still and allow God to fight for you.  Let Him send the devil running!
