Boarding School - A True Story
"What am I going to do with you?" My harsh voice struck out to our youngest daughter.

Having changed her classes, when she claimed she did not like them, now she was failing in all her subjects, and I was at a loss.

Our older children had all graduated from High School with good grades and I was puzzled as what to do next with our "baby."

It was well into the beginning of her senior year in High School, we needed to do something quick so  she could catch up and graduate.

Our church had just welcomed a special guest missionary speaker who mentioned that their children were living at a boarding school several miles down the coast from us.  This Christian school was lodging the children of other missionaries, and also students who needed help scholastically.

Our daughter offered a suggestion, “Why don’t you send me to Watsonville to that Christian school down there?”

I replied, “That might be a good idea, but I don’t know if they will take you since the school year has already begun - - However I will phone them and ask.”

The lady who answered the phone was very positive and she urged me to pack a suitcase and bring our daughter on down.

Arriving after a nice drive along the scenic route, we were given a tour of the campus and the dorms. Each room had two single beds with a bathroom that was connected to an adjoining room.

We signed the paper work and paid for one month and giving Judie a hug, we said our good byes and left. As we drove away we could see her standing there like a lost child.
School went well for her.  After the evening meal, each dorm was on "lock up" until the students in that dorm completed their homework assignments. Judie was the last one to finish her homework. “Let us help you” all the girls chimed in, and our daughter agreed.

It did not take long for her to be voted class president and to adjust to the discipline at the school. I believe she benefited from the structure of order and that probably is why she adapted so well to the Air Force which she later joined.

The months quickly rolled by and when she proudly graduated from High School, and it was with honors.

Monte Vista Christian school and the personal attention they offered, gave her the confidence to believe that she could excel.

Today she holds several degrees from college and also a Masters degree.

Something was missing in me to encourage her, but with new surroundings and God’s help, she discovered hidden abilities within herself.

Count to TEN 

Early in our marriage, my husband decided to begin a new career and it required me to go back to work while he learned his new trade. 

My parents had promised to care for our children while I worked, and it was entertaining for them to be with Grandma and Grandpa during the day. 

My job search began first by using the newspaper Want Ads.   I found an interesting ad at an automobile dealership.  They needed someone in their office to do bookkeeping.   

The gentleman doing the interview said, “Quickly in your head add these numbers; 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10.”  I was always very good at math, and when I promptly gave him the correct answer he shrugged it off by saying, “You probably already knew the answer.”

He ended the interview by telling me to go home and take care of my small children as I might be too over qualified for this job. 

I was disappointed, but kept looking for work.  Soon, I was hired at a small business that needed an accounts receivable person.   One thing was, at this place of work, they never asked me to count to ten!! 

Counting to ten is an old fashioned method used to learn to control your temper.  By the time you get to ten, supposedly you have cooled off and can remain calm again. 

My Pastor’s wife taught me how to control my children by counting aloud, slowly to ten.  I watched her in our church nursery with her two boys, and when they misbehaved she very slowly began her count.  I was amazed at their response to settle down, and I told her so.  I also remarked that I was going to try this very soon with my own children.

She suggested that first I threaten them with a punishment if I ever get to ten.  Provided they changed their behavior early enough they were home scot-free.   

It is not a sin to be angry at evil and un-justice.  However God desires that we control our anger and not be quick to loose our temper and carry it too far into destructive behavior.  

Jesus was angry with the money changers in the temple.  He was upset with their greed, and their disrespect for God’s house.  That day He put on quite a vivid display of Righteous Anger.  It is not a sin to be angry, but we are not to hold on to anger over-night. 

Ephesians 4:26  Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: 

Proverbs 14:17  He that is soon angry deals foolishly: 

Ecclesiastes  7:9  Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger rests in the bosom of fools. 

If you personally are having issues with anger - - Please count slowly to TEN!

It’s Only a Small Zucchini !!    

My items were few in number, so I decided to go through the self help line where you scan your own items.

Quickly I ran each item through the process, and paid for my purchases.  

Hastily I placed my bags into my shopping cart and sped out to the parking lot.

As I loaded my goods into my van, I noticed there on the bottom of the shopping cart, one lonely zucchini squash that I had forgot to scan and pay for.

Oh yes, I was in a hurry, but I knew the few cents that I owed for this item, must be paid for.  Otherwise I would not be able to sleep good tonight.

Hurrying back into the store; I got in line again at the “Do it yourself scanner.”

There you go; 34 cents was my purchase.  I decided to find change in my purse and enter the coins one at a time.  Plunk, plink, plink - - paid in full.

Taking my receipt, I left the store, feeling good about being honest in the smallest of things.

Now Lord, help me to be honest about the bigger things!

Raven’s Wings a True Story from my Book Three "Rescue the Stories"

The year was 1976, and at the last minute, our youngest adult daughter decided to become a student of the Bible College along with us.  I went with her to the dean, and he quickly made a decision to allow her to enroll.  To provide for the costs of the school, she needed a job, and she soon found one, evenings as a waitress at the Steak and Ale restaurant. 

She confided to me, that in her evening shift, there were often customers who were quite inebriated, enjoying their ale without even laying a fork on their steak dinner.  One night she brought home a large steak that had not been touched, and she suggested that our dogs might enjoy a nice treat.  I put it in the refrigerator. 

The next day, one of the young men from the school came home with us to help with some yard work in exchange for lunch.   

I prepared some green beans, fresh sliced tomatoes, some steak cut in thin slices smothered in gravy and onions, over some white rice, along with hot French bread. 

When my daughter came in for lunch she stared at the table, and with a horrified look on her face, she exclaimed, “Mother, where did you get that meat?”  

I looked at her, smiled and softly replied, “The Lord sent it by a little bird!” 

Nothing else was said, and we all enjoyed our meal. 

By now you have guessed where that meat came from!  And as far as I was concerned, the Lord had provided it.   

There are occasions in life where the Lord provides for our needs using methods that may seem strange to us!  No, He doesn’t always use ravens as he did with Elijah, but there are other ways that are out of the ordinary. 

Do not question the extraordinary, or even the supernatural means God may use to provide for you.  Most generally, the provision comes through working at a job - - and yes, God regularly supplies work; at times the work comes at just the right moment!  

What ever your need is in life, if a raven brings it to you, go ahead, receive it with gratitude, and thank the Lord. 

1Kings 17:6  And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.

Letting Go of Stuff  - a True Story

It is amazing when we read the stories written by others that our own memories are resurrected with yet another story for we thought we had already told it all. 

Some time back an entry by Sharon Sharing God told about her dream.  In the dream she discovered a lot of her “Stuff” that she had given away was discarded and ready to be buried.  She wondered why they had not valued her stuff !  (Be sure to Click on the red words above to view Sharon's awesome post.)

There are times when it is necessary to clean out our garage, closets, attic and give to an organization or find someone who can use what you no longer need. 

Long ago, we purchased a white velvet couch and matching love seat that we enjoyed for many years.   

When we moved to our present mobile home, we decided to purchase a hide-a-bed and would no longer need the pair of living room furniture.   

A local Ministry was requesting furniture of any kind, so we donated our white velvet divan and love seat along with an office desk and chair. 

Some tell us when you contribute money, you lose the right to say how it will be spent, and I suppose it is the same with items donated to a good cause. 

Apparently what the group did was to hold a yard sale of the donated furniture to raise funds for their ongoing expenses. 

Time passed, and one day as I drove my car down one of the semi-main streets of town, there I spotted in the front yard of a small house our “White Velvet Love Seat,” with a FOR SALE sign on it. 

I knew it was OURS, and at first I was angry that the person was going to make a profit from our lovely seat. 

Then God spoke to me and said, “Let it go, it is no longer yours, but it is theirs, so they can do with it as they like.” 

Then I began to consider people I have known, witnessed to, and often helped in times past, and I realized that they belong to God and they did not really belong to me. 

Let them go, for they are in good hands.
