BOLDNESS (From my Book Rescue the Stories Book One)

As a young child, I was extremely shy, and in school if the teacher called on me to recite, my heart would pound and my face would turn a crimson red.  I would suffer the flush flowing to my cheeks, and tears rushing to my eyes, and my body was almost frozen not allowing my mouth to speak.  Fear has it’s torment !!

My teacher was wise, and she decided that to help me out of my shell, she would give me some responsibility.  One day, she led me into the children’s library that was next to our first grade room, and showed me how to place the books on the shelf in their order by author.  She told me that I was now in charge of the library.  I suppose that began my love for books and the printed word.  Also my being an in-charge person!

One day, my teacher decided to divide the class into three reading groups.  As she called the names for group one, I was not included.  Group two was called and I heard my name.

I was stunned.  Although it was not the actual case, I perceived group two and three to mean, inferior and less important than group one, and I was not happy.

The teacher was speaking, “Group one will please come with me into the Library, and the others will stay and study their lesson.”  Group one stood and began to follow the teacher.  I also stood and tagged along with the others.

The teacher noticed immediately and gently told me, “Hazel, you are in group two.”

I boldly spoke up and said firmly, “I am number one.”  The teacher, hid a smile, and said, “alright, I will include you in group one.”

That incident of being bold did NOT cure me of my shyness, or embarrassment when I was called on, but I was emotionally rewarded for having stood up for what I believed at the time.

Do you ever break out in a cold sweat, your heart pounds like a drum, and the palms of your hands are wet with fear?   I must insert here, “Join the Club.”

Most of us suffer with times of hesitancy to step forward when there is a need to make a stand.  Many of our fears are imaginary and we fanaticize what might happen if we act.

Joyce Meyer has a saying that has meant a lot to me, and it is: “DO it AFRAID.”

The next good piece of advice is to listen to the still small voice of the Holy Spirit.

If the Lord is telling you, to speak up, shut up, go forward, get out, stay there - - be quick to listen, and if it lines up with the Word of God, and you have peace about it, then obey.

Boldness comes with practice, and each time you listen and obey, you will gain confidence.   The Holy Spirit is our helper, and He gives strength to the weak, and might and power to those who will make the effort to ask Him for it, and believe it is for you.

Be Bold, be confident, and know that God will open doors for you, simply be courageous enough to enter each door, and you will be amazed what God will do through you.

Proverbs 28:1  The wicked flee when no man pursues: but the righteous are bold as a lion.

This Story is from my Book "Rescue the Stories Book One"

I looked around the bleak Exeter railroad station, as my mother placed a box full of kitchen utensils, and an ironing board at the window for shipping to our new home in Oakland.

The first five years of my life, my dad had not enjoyed a permanent job.

My Uncle Clarence had encouraged Dad to come to Oakland for a job interview at the Southern Pacific Railroad where he worked.  What anticipation for a new life we hoped to experience when Dad was hired as a switchman for the railroad!

If Dad needed extra money (which was often) he had the opportunity to work on the extra board, which required 8 hours work and 8 hours off, in a revolving schedule.  Mother would place a sign on the door that read “Day Sleeper, Do Not Disturb.”  This was to discourage the door to door salespersons that frequented our neighborhood.

One day I decided to play “Sales Lady,” and not yet being able to read, I rang the doorbell repeatedly.  Finally the door opened and it was my dad who gruffly growled, “What do you want?”  Hesitatingly I blurted out, “I was just playing sales lady.”

Realizing what I had probably woke him up, I was frightened!  I began to sob profusely with huge tears rolling down my face.

His heart melted!   He opened wide the door, took me in his arms assuring me that all was forgiven, and suggested that I play quiet games when he was asleep.  Needless to say, I did not ring the door bell anymore or play sales lady after that episode.

Isn’t it strange how we can learn some lessons in life more easily than others?  Often without actually getting hurt.  Shocked, maybe, and even brought to tears, but soon the lesson is over and we automatically resume our daily duties.

Not every thing I have learned through the years has been effortless and trouble-free.  However, the lessons learned through mistakes are most difficult.  Not always can our mistakes simply disappear and go away.  The fruit of many mistakes will follow us through our entire life.

So what am I saying?  Learn quickly what to avoid and what not to repeat.   Place your faith in Jesus and follow Him.  The Holy Spirit is the perfect teacher and guide to show us the best course for our life.

If you have made mistakes, understand that all is not lost.  Your route may now be different than you at first anticipated, but even that pathway can be a glorious itinerary with Jesus as your leader.  God does not run out of plans, take plan B, or C or even Z.

Dr Jesus Makes House Calls

I am thankful for Dr. Jesus. The Bible tells us that Jesus went about, doing good, and healing all who were sick and oppressed of the Devil.

Jesus even made a house call at Peter’s home, and healed Peter’s Mother-in-law who was sick with a fever.  Then she was able to get up and prepare a nice meal for her guests.

It seems these days that there is a lot of virus and illness going around.

Understand this is not the only reason, but one factor that might continue to cause a person to be sick is unsettled arguments. Also bitterness, resentment, and holding grudges are detrimental to your health!

When I was a little girl, my brother, sister, and I would get into arguments, and our mother would insist that we say, “I’m sorry,” and apologize to each other.
Then mother would require the other person to say, “I forgive you.”

Oh how I hated that, because sometimes I was so angry that I did not want to apologize or forgive.

But you know, after doing something many times it becomes easier on the next occasion.

The Bible tells us, Not to let the sun go down on our wrath, and it is a good idea to get things out of the way quickly, and not allow them to fester.

So if you sense sickness coming your way, examine your attitudes, and get anything that is old business out of the way.  Then rejoice, sing and praise the lord, for cheerfulness is like medicine from the Lord.

Proverbs 17:22 A merry heart does good like a medicine: but a broken spirit dries the bones.

Just a little after thought -
Let me share a little secret to keep a happy marriage. It is for us ladies to learn at times to simply Shut our mouths. You may laugh at that, but it is true.
Being quiet when you want to reply angrily is difficult; I can certainly tell you that! But in the long run it will keep peace in your home!

The Bible speaks in the book of Proverbs thusly: It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman.

Beautiful Quilts from Left over Scraps
A True Story from my book, "Rescue the Stories Book ONE"

Very carefully we cut into 6 inch squares some of the left over material from dresses my mother had made for my sister and me as we grew up.  These were leftover, bits and pieces, good-for-nothing – just waste.  Could there be a decent use for these unsightly odd looking snippets?

Mother had a new purpose, and it was to use the scraps of yardage and potentially sew the squares together into a pretty combination for a quilt top. The throw away scraps had a renewed purpose. They would amount to something lovely and good after all !!

Once all the square pieces were sewed in place, then each strip was then sewed to the previous length until the whole was large enough for a quilt. Mother would purchase a contrasting piece of flannel yardage for the back of the quilt. Inside she would place an old blanket or a flannel sheet.  The quilt was now ready to tie.

My dad had made a set of wooden frames for Mother so she could stretch the quilt. Arming ourselves with large needles and crochet thread, we were ready to begin the tying process.

At each corner of the small squares we pulled the needle through and tied a double knot. Also we placed a tie in the center of each square. When we had completed as far as we could reach, we rolled the frame and secured it fast with clamps.

With us all working together, in no time at all the quilt was tied. Now it was ready to tuck the edges inside and use a blanket stitch (similar to a button hole stitch) around the entire quilt. If the quilt ever got dirty, it was securely made so a gentle wash would not harm the back or the insides.

Quilt making is almost a lost art, but it could be something that would renew the families love of working together on a project. If you do not sew your own clothing, there are usually remnants sold at the yardage store for only a small amount of money. Think about this wonderful project that you and your children would enjoy helping to create.

In life, you may often feel that you are a piece of scrap, left over, wasted, and good for nothing.  But I have good news. You are not a throw away!  God is able to take your life and renew it into something beautiful and into a fantastic work of art.

First you must submit yourself into God’s hands. The needle God uses may hurt as He ties you all back together, but soon you will understand it was all for your good, and you will be pleased and satisfied with the end result.
