Just Do Your Part

Oh - It Hurt's my Ears and My Spiritual Ears Too

The screeching noise of finger nails scraping on a blackboard arouses an unpleasant sensation that is extremely irritating to most people. In the same way, this is the sensation I perceive with my inner ear each time I hear the Name of Jesus Christ used in vain!

Two young college boys had been hired as extra help at my previous work place.  They were laughing, jesting and having fun as they worked.  Without the slightest thought on their part, the insensitive use of the Name of Jesus Christ poured forth in their conversation.

At my place of work, I made it a practice to allow Jesus to shine through me and not to display a self-righteous and pious attitude. Witnessing at work was sometimes tricky! Often, when someone would approach me with a question, the opportunity would present itself. Other times I had to ask the Lord for the proper moment to make a move.  Regarding these young men, I felt that the situation needed attention soon.  I asked the Lord “What should I do?”  His prompting was clear. The next afternoon, I took a newspaper clipping about my mother to work with me.

We live near one of the large California dams, and our annual local festival was seeking a possible name change to incorporate the word “Dam.”  The newspaper had been interviewing people on the street. My mother was asked the question, “Do you think the old name ‘Fiesta Days’ should be changed to ‘Dam Days’?”  Mother answered, “My parents always taught me to never use the Lord’s name in vain, or to use language that was swearing.  I think it would be wise to keep the name Fiesta Days.”

Wouldn’t you know it?  They printed her response. The newspaper and the city took that simple testimony and kept the name ‘Fiesta Days’ for our annual celebration.

Prepared with that clipping, all I needed was the right time.  Timing is important!  When approaching someone, it is not a good idea to draw attention or to embarrass them.  I waited - - -

The next day at break time the two young men headed for the outside porch.

Picking up my news article, I followed after them.  After a cheerful greeting, I asked them if I could show them something.  Of course they agreed.  With the article unfolded, I let them know that it was about my Mother, and proceeded to read.  I smiled and gently mentioned that I was also raised not to swear and especially not to take the name of Jesus Christ in vain.  I asked them if they could respect that and they heartily replied, “We certainly can!”

Things went well, so I walked down to another area to continue my break.  Upon returning, I discovered that the two boys went back to the office and enlightened everyone to what had just happened!  I did not need to say a word.  A little birdie did it for me.

The story does not end there, but it does change players! Another lady in the office invited the boys to her church.  One of the boys decided to attend with his girlfriend!  What was the outcome?  Both young people gave their hearts to the Lord!

So my friend each of us has a unique circle of influence and none of our ministries is exactly the same.  We all have a part to play in the scope of His program.  Some of us have a pulpit while others of us reflect God’s love when and where we can.  Certain people have the task of planting the seed.  Watering and nurturing the seed is a vital job.   For others, harvesting is their part of the total process.

God doesn’t expect any of us to do it all. What does the Lord ask of you?  Just to do your part.

Counsel

I heard the frantic cry of my husband, “Hazel, Please come in her quick,” was his plea.

We were assisting a small church in their Christian Educational department, but my husband was often asked to perform other duties.

On this day, a distressed woman had asked for counsel as she was having a problem coping with her distraught husband.  The gentleman had recently suffered the loss of one of his arms, and feeling that he was less of a man, he ending up by pushing her away.

Arriving to answer my husband’s call of concern, I entered to find the woman dressed provocatively in a mini skirt, a deep cut blouse and heavy make up.

One important thing they teach you in any Bible School is to protect yourself against gossip or suspicion that could end in slander.  Here was a typical example in full view.

Ministers should be careful if at all possible not to council the opposite sex with the door shut, and if available to invite their mate, or another person to sit in on the session.

Sobbing, the woman poured out her story, and it was extremely evident that she did not actually want direction and guidance.  She was searching for someone to agree with her and comfort her in her decision to leave her husband.

A few months later, we saw her again, and this time she informed us that she was happily engaged to be married to a fine gentleman.  We offered our congratulations.  What else could we say?

I am reminded of the wedding vows, so easily forgotten by some, in times of illness, accidents, or even when angry, “Forsaking all others; until death do us part.”

Many times, the grass on the other side of the fence that appears so inviting will soon surprise you, for it has been sprayed with weed killer, and will quickly wither and dry up.

Not all exchanges are for the better.  Only one is; the great exchange.  This is when you give Jesus your old life and you receive HIS everlasting life to live inside your heart.

For myself, when it comes to counseling, I have discovered long ago, that a little talk with your best friend, Jesus is safe; and He does not pass your secrets on to others.

A True Story from my book Rescue the Stories Book Two

Marie’s husband was a hard worker, and he had done his best to scratch out a living on their Tennessee farm.  Even in those days times were tough for a large family.

When the husband received an offer from a neighbor to purchase their Tennessee place, it seemed like a good time to pull up stakes and move to California.

Desiring to assist his daughter and his nine grandchildren, Marie’s dad drove his car to Tennessee to help their family make the move to California.  Arranging a house for them he had also secured work for the husband at the Auto Wrecking Yard.

Even though we could hardly afford to do so, Robert and I took several boxes of groceries to their place to help stock their cupboards.  The boxes included canned goods, meat, some staples and a box of oranges for the kids.

We were horrified when the older kids instead of enjoying the fresh fruit, began to have a throwing fight with each other.  Quickly I managed to stop all the throwing and then it was needful to give them a lesson on how to eat an orange and about the value of food.

Early in the morning a few days later, I received a telephone call from the oldest daughter.  She spoke anxiously and requested that I please come and take her mother to the doctor.  I asked if her mother was hurt, and she said, “No, but Mama has an appointment.”

When I arrived, there was Marie waiting and smiling.  Entering my car, she asked me to please take her to the local grammar school because today they are giving away free clothing.  Surprised, I asked, “What about the Doctor?”  With out missing a beat, she stated, “Oh I knew you might not come just to help me get some clothes for the kids unless we said it was for the Doctor.”

It seemed that the school had certain days when those with a need could come and get clothing, and I saw nothing wrong with that.  However I had to be bold and tell Marie, that she had lied to me, and this time I would take her, but she had betrayed my trust, and today would be my last trip to help her.  There are times when you can only go so far.

It is sad to say, that this woman was a habitual liar.  She could not even open her mouth to speak - - with out telling a lie.  Even more depressing was the fact that she was also training her children to become liars.

I am reminded that the Bible says that LIES are an abomination to God.  It also states that all liars have a very hot place to go to.  After all Satan is the father of lies and we do not want to associate with him.  May I also say, politicians, and leaders who lie are not good people to follow.

My mother taught us as children to tell the truth, and we did a reasonably good job of truth telling.  I have tried to impress on our children that Truth is always best and a Liar will always be found out.

Jesus told us that He was the Way the Truth and the Life.  May we ever seek His Truth!

A True Story from my book Rescue the Stories Book Two

A Good Book Can Help

Besides the Good Book, (The Bible,) when my children were just babies, I subscribed to  Parent’s Magazine.  I gleaned many tips and ideas that were of tremendous help to me in those early years.

As time passed, I found a special book - - probably at a Thrift Store; but I discovered it to be a wonderful book on raising children.

Here was an outstanding book that incorporated answers to all sorts of behavior problems.  Included were fact-filled chapters covering various ages through the teenage years, along with suggestions on how to cope with different and difficult problems.

During that time, we had five teenagers in our household; our three, a brother-in-law our son’s age, and our foster daughter.  Disturbing emotional problems plagued our sweet foster daughter!  I was prompted to give special attention to her each evening.  It was ten minutes with no preaching, but rather just talking and listening.  What wonderful therapy there is for others if a person can just be a good listener!

Before entering her room, I reviewed a current chapter in the book, and prayed asking the Lord how this would apply to her.  Certain lines from the book seemed to stand out, and were to become the answer for that evening.

Just a sentence or two, and the Lord’s direction on what else to say next, the answer was provided for her need each evening.

Today, with children, and even with friends, using a few moments of quality time, can work wonders!  Share an encouraging thought that will bring them confidence and will show your support!

At times, it might be a line from something you have picked up from a book; a magazine or possibly the internet; that will carry enough weight to bless your child or your friend.

Of course do not forget to utilize the Bible!

Ask the Lord, “What do I say next?”  He may direct you to a Scripture verse that can complement, and then completely cement the thoughts for you to share.

Proverbs 15:23  A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good it is!
