Robert and I will celebrate our 66th Wedding Anniversary December 1.
This is a true story about our wedding, from my book Rescue the Stories Book Two.

Our Wedding Dec 1, 1949

The background music was softly playing as the Minister, my bridegroom, and the best man stepped out to the front of the church, waiting for the rest of the wedding party to arrive.

It was evident that the best man was somewhat nervous because he was busily chomping away on a stick of gum.

My mother caught his eye and made a chewing motion with her mouth, and understanding her “sign language,” message he promptly swallowed his gum.

“Here comes the bride,” began to play and the wedding proceeded with out any further problems at least for the ceremony.

Many weddings have a story to tell of something that went wrong on their special day.

Some are horror stories and some are simply downright humorous!

My sister had decided to play a trick on me, and when we arrived at our motel, I discovered that she had tightly sewed up my new nightgown at all the openings.

I could not contain myself and began to laugh loudly at her joke.  I told her later that she was pretty funny and of course I was not angry at her harmless prank.

Not so funny was the other stunt someone did to our borrowed car.  We never knew for sure who it was, but the lug bolts on one of the wheels had been loosened, which caused the wheel to almost come off.  We spent the better part of the next afternoon at the auto wrecking yard purchasing a used wheel to replace the damaged one.

Practical jokes are certainly not funny to the receiver of their brunt!  Many times they are dangerous and can seriously harm a person or a relationship.

We tried to teach our children, to never pay back each other for wrongs either true or thought to be, and not to hide or destroy the possessions of others.

Ephesians 4:32  And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

Aunt Hazel’s Mating Game Advice

Are you single and serious about desiring a mate?  The first item on your list should be to pray and ask the Lord to send that special “Jesus loving” person to across your path.

Church is usually the perfect place to find a Christian mate, but don’t discount other places or ways for this to happen.  After all, not every good prospect attends YOUR church!

Small-groups in your church are a good spot to find eligible men or women!  Do join a small Christian group!  Of course, do not fail to participate in the discussions at a Bible study.  Men like a woman who speaks out, but watch out!  The ladies who want to argue or talk non-stop will cause a man to lose interest quickly!

Men also do not like grouchy, complaining women, so put on a joyful face and watch your words.  In public or anytime - - grumbling is so unbecoming!

Women want a man who will open up and talk to them, and at least tell them they look nice, and they are pretty or beautiful.  If he can cook, that helps too.  J

What about qualities? I had a friend who made a list of the traits she wanted in a husband.  Each night she would pray as she went over her list, and she would tell the Lord that she believed He was bringing this type of person into her life.  As I recall, most of the qualities were there when she did find a good husband.

I do not believe she settled for less.  The simple fact is that no one is completely perfect and her expectations were very high.  Of course, now she knows that there are always compromises in a marriage - especially if one desires peace in the household.  Treating each other with kindness and respect is vital to any relationship.  Not always wanting the “last word,” can save a marriage!

Not necessarily suggested, but my youngest daughter found her wonderful husband through a Christian dating service, so pray and investigate.  There is an internet site that reviews Christian dating services:  - - interestingly enough, they do NOT recommend some of the more popular companies such as e-Harmony.  In fact the only one they recommend is Christian CafĂ©.

Some friends of mine have found they are happy to remain single; and there are many reasons for this, too.

The Bible tells us above all, to learn to be content!  Do not be afraid to enjoy life, in whatever station you find yourself.

Proverbs 18:22   Who ever finds a wife (or husband) finds a good thing, and obtains favor of the LORD.

Let Your Flash Light Shine  (A Very Recent True Story)

The moonless night was dark, and my dog, Luke needed his final walk before being put to bed.  I turned on the porch light, and for a fleeting second had a thought to take my flashlight.  It was the Lord reminding me, but I passed it off (thinking it was me) and said to myself, I will be careful and I think there is enough light from the porch for me to see.

Those were my famous last words (thoughts) as I ventured out into the night.  Wow it was darker than I thought, and I could visualize myself face down on the pavement.  In less than 30 seconds that vision came true as my foot hit a protruding bump put there for the wheel barrel to pass over the curbing.  My body skidded downward; my face and head hit the cement curb, and my breast probably was shielding my ribs from being broken.

I could feel blood pouring down my face and neck and my dog anxiously was trying to help me.  I lay there for a minute attempting to catch my bearings.  I felt around me - - touching a large free standing 12 x 2 inch high electrical outlet.  The Angels kept me from falling on top of that or it would have been bye bye birdie.

Gaining my footing and heading for our mobile, and the bath room; revealed a cut over my eyebrow and scrapes on my face.  A cold water compress was applied and a Band-Aid to keep the blood from hitting my pillow as I joined my sleeping husband.

Am I okay?  Yes except for skinned knees, cut on forehead, a black eye and bruises showing up after two days.  I am taking aspirin a couple times a day to keep my blood thin.

Now the moral of this true story is:  Always take the Flash Light and let it shine in the dark.  Heed the voice of the Holy Spirit as He whispers so softly that you think it is your own thought.

I was reminded that we live in a darkened world and many out there are without a (flash) LIGHT.  As we hold the Light of Life High, may we speak out and share the true Gospel so that they too may have this everlasting Light of Life if they will only come to Jesus and kneel at the blood stained cross.

Money From Heaven?  Not!

Perhaps God wanted me to have new appliances!!  At least that is what my husband said.

Arriving at our new residence in Oklahoma, there were a few important items missing!  Among those details was a refrigerator, and a washer and dryer, and, oh yes, a hide-a-bed.   Our large ice chest would have to suffice for awhile.

I told my husband that we would look in the classified ads, and God would provide.  The hide-a-bed was obtained quickly!  Now we had a place to sit and to use as an extra bed for company.  Finding a used refrigerator, washer and dryer was proving difficult.  Either there were none to be found, or the prices were too high.  What to do?

In the local paper, Sears advertised Turbine Vents and their installation for a certain price.  As my husband read, he realized that the installation would be easy, so he made a visit to Sears and told them that he was there to help them.  He informed them that he was a licensed roofing contractor in California, and could easily provide them with an insurance binder.  They confessed that they were having a problem catching up with the installations. With that, we had a job!

When I called the State of Oklahoma about a business license, they informed me that none was needed to do small jobs.  So, it was off to the print shop to get some business cards that said, “OK Roofing” with our telephone number.

My new daily routine was to take the van to Sears, load up the vents and secure the work sheets. Once at home, I stuck pins in a map for each location, then set up a route.  Each customer was called to let them know that their job was scheduled for the following day.  If they were not going to be home, I requested that they hang an extension cord out the window for our use. The rest was up to my husband!

During the summer months, we helped Sears out, and managed to earn enough cash to pay for new appliances!  There was even money left over to shop for a few other items that we needed.  Praise the Lord for His provision!

Money from Heaven?  No! God does not drop money from heaven when you have a need.  Often he provides by giving you work to earn your keep.

If you are in need of provision, take the matter to prayer, and ask the Lord to confirm to you how to get that need met.  He may show you a business that you can do, or guide you to take some classes to expand your skill sets into a new field.  Be open to His leading.

As for us, we have generally had to work, like the apostle Paul did, to provide for our existence. Only a few times were we ever gifted with offerings from individuals.

Many people dream of winning the Lottery, or holding a huge cardboard check with their name on it!  Often, they miss the other blessings God has sent their way.

I can say emphatically that it has been God who has given us numerous bargains, discounts, rebates, and a score of other blessings – including work, as means of provision.

Money from Heaven? No.  Provision from Heaven?  Yes!

Care Packages - A true Story

Many years ago, our church sent a monthly support offering to Margaret Carlow, a single lady missionary, who was serving in Korea.

About that time there was made available to the American public, “Care Packages” with assorted food items that could be donated, and sent overseas.

The packages were made up of selected military surplus food sent by air, from our country to those in other lands.  After World War II many were starving in Europe and this was a cooperative effort to meet a need.

You could choose the address for the box to be sent, so our church women’s ministry group had a good idea.

To me the $10 donation seemed to be an excellent value for food and shipping, plus it would bless our missionary.  Thinking along these lines, I ordered a gift parcel, and paid the amount required and placed her address on the order.

Next I wrote an E-Airmail letter to our missionary to alert her to expect the gift.  (No internet then)

At that time a quick way to communicate over-seas was by E-letter.  It was a one piece blue paper that included postage, and when your letter was written, you folded, sealed and mailed it.

Several weeks later, we received a thank you from our missionary and an explanation.

Apparently for personal reasons, she felt guilty in accepting the food package for herself.  Perhaps she felt unworthy, and thought the food should go to someone who was more in need than herself.

She told us of a Korean Pastor with a large family who were suffering lack, and she had been able to bless this family with the parcel.

Perhaps this was God’s way to supply a need for the native pastor’s family, and we did not question her motive, although at first we did not understand.

After giving it much thought we realized this was the best way to go.  Also it allowed our missionary the opportunity to share with another minister, which she was not able to do except for our care package.   God works in mysterious ways.
