Robert and I will celebrate our 66th Wedding Anniversary December 1.
This is a true story about our wedding, from my book Rescue the Stories Book Two.

Our Wedding Dec 1, 1949

The background music was softly playing as the Minister, my bridegroom, and the best man stepped out to the front of the church, waiting for the rest of the wedding party to arrive.

It was evident that the best man was somewhat nervous because he was busily chomping away on a stick of gum.

My mother caught his eye and made a chewing motion with her mouth, and understanding her “sign language,” message he promptly swallowed his gum.

“Here comes the bride,” began to play and the wedding proceeded with out any further problems at least for the ceremony.

Many weddings have a story to tell of something that went wrong on their special day.

Some are horror stories and some are simply downright humorous!

My sister had decided to play a trick on me, and when we arrived at our motel, I discovered that she had tightly sewed up my new nightgown at all the openings.

I could not contain myself and began to laugh loudly at her joke.  I told her later that she was pretty funny and of course I was not angry at her harmless prank.

Not so funny was the other stunt someone did to our borrowed car.  We never knew for sure who it was, but the lug bolts on one of the wheels had been loosened, which caused the wheel to almost come off.  We spent the better part of the next afternoon at the auto wrecking yard purchasing a used wheel to replace the damaged one.

Practical jokes are certainly not funny to the receiver of their brunt!  Many times they are dangerous and can seriously harm a person or a relationship.

We tried to teach our children, to never pay back each other for wrongs either true or thought to be, and not to hide or destroy the possessions of others.

Ephesians 4:32  And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

  1. Happy Anniversary, Hazel and Robert. You two are a powerful twosome. Not only practical jokes, but some humor can be very hurtful as well. It's like the opposite of funny.

  4. First of all, Hazel, a huge congratulations to you and Robert on your wedding anniversary today! What a testimony your Godly relationship has been to so many people, not just your family! May you have many more blessed years together.

As for the practical jokes, I've never been a fan. Seems to me that most of them either cause embarrassment or humiliation or trouble for the *target*. Just like the incident with your tire. That could have been very dangerous, too. Now, the nightgown story, yes, that was way more amusing!!

GOD BLESS - and again, Happy Anniversary!

I've never been a fan of practical jokes but sewing up the nightgown sounded humorous. The tire incident was dangerous.
Glad you have many joyful memories to look back on.
    Blessings,
    Janis

  10. Happy Anniversary!!! I remember that story too. I thought the sewing prank was clever, but I remember being angry at the second... then was reminded of the right perspective by your wise words... Thanks for sharing this one and the timeless lesson that goes with it again!
