LA LA LA LA LA

Have you ever seen a child (or adult) put their hands to their ears and cry out La La La La La La La?

They just did not want to hear what was being told to them.

The words were probably good words and worth hearing.

In the case of children it was probably something they needed to hear.  In the case of wives – it is often good to listen to a husband’s wisdom.

Have you ever said La La La to God when he is speaking to you?

It may be that God is speaking to you through the Bible and definitely it is worth listening to.

OR it may be the minister at church who is giving out a good message that strikes to your heart.

OR it could be a friend just sharing; what ever the case – next time you are tempted to put your hands over your ears and say La La La, it might be better to stop and listen to what is being said.

Because  - - -  It could be just the very thing you need to hear.

Daddy’s Watch

Happily engrossed in playing with my dolls on the front room floor, I was oblivious to my Dad entering the room and placing his watch on the mantle.  Sharply, he called my attention to it.

He declared, “I am leaving the room for a few minutes, and I do not want you to touch this watch, because the glass face is broken.”

He continued, punctuating each word, “Do… not… take… your… finger …and… move… the… hands, …because… they… will …fall …off …if… you… shift… them!”

Dad worked for the railroad and his watch was a valued possession.  Each month he took it into the jewelers to be cleaned and checked in order to be certain that the time was absolutely accurate.

The stage had been set!!  Here was a typical a five-year-old who, up to that precise moment, could care less about Dad’s watch.  Next was a father giving explicit directions of what NOT to do as he was leaving the room; - - Enter the devil.

Old Satan speaks so subtly to our minds, that we believe it to be our own thoughts.  This particular day he was very active!  He suggested that I just take a tiny peek at the watch.

My curiosity heightened!  Carefully pulling a chair up to the mantle - - I could now touch the watch.  Ever so gently, I moved the hands to see if they would fall off.  They did!!   “Oh no!” I thought to myself, “Now I am in for it!”

What could I do?  Softly re-placing the chair, I quietly tippy-toed back to the rug and set about playing with my dolls.   I tried not to think about what might happen when my dad took notice.

My parents believed in corporal punishment for lying and for stealing, but especially for direct disobedience.  No matter how much I declared my innocence, my dad did not believe me, so the switch was applied.

This instance in my life reminds me of Adam and Eve in the garden.  They were given only one ‘Thou Shalt Not,” and they could not keep it!  Just one tiny bite was all it took.  Their punishment was to leave the beautiful garden, doomed to toil and labor with the sweat of their brow in order to provide for them-selves.

Unfortunately, we have inherited the results of their disobedience: a nature that needs redemption, curiosity about sin, and hard work to care for our families.

When we hear the words, “Thou Shall Not,” we must understand that whatever the directive is, it is for our protection and in our best interest to heed the warning and stay away.

Yes - - and because God knows we are but flesh, He has given us the Holy Spirit to be our helper and guide as we follow Jesus and seek to obey His commandment of Love.

Bossy our Guernsey/Holstein Cow

I must have been around 4 years old, and we lived at the edge of town in Exeter, California in the rear of a house that my dad purchased for $250.

Thinking back, I remember that we could not keep Bossy, our cow at home because even though we lived on the edge of town, we were still within the city limits.  Also Bossy made a lot of noise when she mooed, and that disturbed the neighbors.  She would let you know very loudly that it was time to take her milk.

Each morning my mother and I would walk a long way; Mom carrying a clean bucket so she could milk old Bossy, and we would have milk for our day.  The farmers, who kept Bossy for us, would milk our cow at night and keep the milk for their family.

One day in particular, Mother asked me if I would like to learn to milk our cow.  It certainly did appear easy enough, so of course I said, “Yes, let me try.”

Mother showed me how to sit on the small stool, and how to place my hands and fingers, then she said; “OK now it is your turn.”

I have been told that cows know who is a friend is and who is a stranger, and somehow old Bossy shut down her milk supply, and the faucets did not work for me.

That was the first and last time I ever tried to milk a cow.

Although I was born out in the country on my Grandparents ranch, I believe I am still a city gal and probably always will be, even when I reach that city of gold in the heavens.

Down to the Valley for Christmas

As children, we usually traveled as a family down to the San Joaquin Valley to spend Christmas with my mother’s parents.

Our tree at home was decorated and under it were gifts for each of us.  Most often we would receive a new sweater, new pajamas, and other needed clothing at Christmas.  Mother would make a new doll dress for my old doll and wrap up the doll - - clothes and all for me to open.  Nestled under the tree were several small surprise gifts that would keep us speculating and trying to guess what they were.

“You must wait until we get back from our trip to visit Grandma and Grandpa before you can open your presents,” mother told us.

We begged, “Please,” but mother held fast to her decision.  Finally she relented and said, “You may each select ONE gift to open, but ONLY one.”

I carefully inspected the presents, and tried to consider what each package might contain.  One mysterious package was shaped like a long triangle and it intrigued me.  I wondered what it could be.  At last I made my choice and picked up the small triangular gift.

Carefully I opened it and to my disappointment it was a new “Rat tailed comb.” I had wanted something more exciting, and I told mother so.

“You made your choice and it stands.” She let me know my decision was final.

I am reminded in life that we often believe something looks good to our eyes but once we are able to view the inner core we are truly unhappy with the results.  Sometimes it is a person, a friend, and other times it is something we think we need to purchase.

Did you even get your self in a pickle that looked exciting and discover to your sorrow and chagrin that disillusionment was your reward?

I suppose that if we would pray more before we leap, we would not fall quite so far!

Mark 14:38 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.

The gifts that will bless the longest in time are not purchased with gold and silver but are given and received with love shown by action.

This type of giving will not rust and decay but will continue to be enjoyed as long as the gift is kept active.

How about giving some compliments, and good words to those you love, for kind and loving words are always in season.   Encouraging words will lift you up and never pull you down!

Psalms_119:103  How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
