Burnt toast and Curly Hair

My Dad insisted that he was born with straight black hair, but always wished for curls.

As he tells it, his sister Blanch told him that if he really wanted black curly hair that he must eat lots of burnt toast.  My dad believed her, and each morning he would burn his toast on purpose to a crisp and enjoy the flavor.

Some say this is a myth, but I wonder, because after many months it began to work, for his black hair began to curl.  All the days that I knew my dad he sported black curly hair.

Dad may have told me that story in-order to get me to eat my burnt toast, and I don’t mind toast that is a bit burnt, however my blond hair never did turn black with curls.

Many of us are not satisfied with our hair, our shape, our nose, our eyes, because we have this tendency to always want to be something different than the way God made us.

Let me diverse here and apply this toward a spiritual subject.  Here is where we can be changed into a New Creation, to never be the same again.

Isn’t it wonderful that you do not need to eat burnt toast to become this new person?  Simply invite Jesus into your heart and he does the changing by his Holy Spirit.

2 Corinthians 5:17  Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things are passed away; behold, new things have come.

Birthdays and Unusual Celebrations

Thinking back I remember my first Birthday party.  It was on my tenth birthday my mother allowed me to invite a few friends from school for a party.  Mother set it up in our back yard, with my small table, and we had a picnic while we played “pin the tail on the donkey,” and enjoyed cake and punch.”

My last party was when I hit the big 40.  My children and my parents were there and we all celebrated this milestone in my life.

I have done some unusual things on several of my birthdays.

It just so happened that one year my birthday fell on my day to volunteer at the Rescue Mission Thrift Shop in old Down Town Oakland.  My sister came down to wish me a Happy Birthday, and she exclaimed, “What a way to celebrate your birthday.”

Many years ago now, my dad had been in the Chico hospital with kidney failure.  He did not live to return to his earthly home.  It just so turned out that the most convenient day for his funeral happened to be on my birthday!  Mother had too much on her mind, and I think it was much later that she realized this was no way to celebrate my birthday!!

My husband is not one for cards and gifts, but he did send me the following e-mail on the day just prior to my Birthday May 22, and I share it with you.

To Hazel MY ONLY WIFE

Almost eighty five and still going, it doesn’t get much better than that.  Eighty five is a pretty big number and you have spent three fourths of it with me.  We were young and I think we chose well. I can't imagine ever being with someone else.  I want to thank you for our life together all these years, you have been a good wife to me and I look forward to finishing our lives together however long it may be.  I have, I do, and I will love you only.     I love you.  Bobby Ray Moon

Bail Out by Uncle Martin
(A True Story from my Book "Rescue the Stories - Book One."

Desiring to earn some money at my young age of about eight years, I clipped a coupon from a magazine and sent off for some miracle salve to sell.  It wasn’t long before my product arrived, and now I was in business.

My Uncle Martin came for a visit and cheerfully made a purchase of two cans of salve, one for colds and one for aches and pains.

Now I needed to earn enough to repay my mother who had fronted my investment.

Dutifully I trudged from door to door, but my neighbors simply weren’t interested in my Miracle Salve.  Being a bit discouraged, I put my sales box away in my bedroom.

A few months flew by and my Uncle Martin came for another visit.  “Hey there,” he said to me, “Do you have any more of that good salve?  If you do, I will buy what ever you have left.”

That night as he headed for home I gave my Uncle Martin an extra big hug.

I was rich, not because I had sold all of my salve, but because I was loved and understood.

My hope is that you all have an Uncle Martin somewhere in your life!

If you have ever tried to sell something when you were young you will understand the discouragement of many answers in the negative.  It was when someone encouraged you and bought those cookies or candy that darkness turned to light - - Sadness into Joy!

Next time you see the Girl Scouts selling cookies or children trying to raise money to go to camp, be available to support them by making a purchase.

Don’t use the excuse that you are on a diet - - just donate the cookies to your next church social.

In your immediate life there are those that can use a bit of encouragement.  Just a word fitly spoken is like sweet honey to their ears.

Won’t cost you a cent, but it will light up their life.

Proverbs 25:11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.

Are We Rich Now?
A True story from my Book "Rescue the Stories Book 2."

When my husband went into business for himself, in the early 1970’s - - our children wondered; “Are we rich now?”

Jealousy in the heart of the boss’s son (and the boss’s wife), caused my husband to lose his secure job, but his boss told him that he would help him go into business for himself.

My husband was worried to try this alone and wanted to bring in the son of his old boss as a partner.  Instead I encouraged him not to do that as it would be a linking together with an unbeliever.  In his place I would help him and God would be our partner.  My husband had peace about it and agreed.

He studied hard for the test, and it was all a process but God gave him wisdom, and he passed the contractors license test in a breeze.

We secured a loan and purchased a flat bed truck and placed small ads in the news paper.  His old boss even made a deal for us to help him with some of his subcontracting work for a percentage.

Now we were a company with a name, and that gave us prestige.  Our children asked me “Are we rich now?”   I had to sit them all down and explain that prior to this new event in our lives, their Dad had to depend on his boss for work, and now we had to depend on God to give us jobs so we could earn our daily bread.  I urged them to be happy, but not proud with an attitude of "I'm better than you."

I think we worked harder than ever before, especially that first year.  The placing of ads in the paper, the giving of bids and follow up all took time.

God blessed us but we both labored diligently at this new endeavor.  I took phone calls, ran errands to secure permits, did the books along with taxes, and my husband did the hard part - the actual job.  No we weren’t rich, but not poor either, just hard working - - “Middle class people.”

I suppose in many ways - - we were rich too!

The Love story of my Grandparents began when they met at a church “Box lunch social.”

Each lady was to bring a box lunch, and the gentlemen would bid on the box, not knowing who the lady was.  Then they were to share and enjoy the lunch together.

My grandmother Mary was a governess and cared for the children of a neighborhood family.  Therefore she did not meet many people outside the home, so she always looked forward to attending church each Sunday.

Mary was excited about the social event, and was happy to prepare a box lunch with fried chicken, potato salad, some walnut halves, and two slices of apple pie.

As the bidding for the lunches began, my Grandmother was hoping (and praying) that Allen would secure her lunch.  As God is my witness, Allen did win her box and this was their first “date.”

The old saying “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach,” is certainly true.  On that day, Allen was smitten with my grandmother, and it did not take him long to propose and ask her to marry him.

They began married life as share croppers, but soon Allen was able to use money he had been putting away, and purchase 10 acres in Lindsay, California.  He planted half the land in olive trees, half in oranges; and added a few other fruit trees.  He built a barn, a chicken coop and along one side of the lot line he planted some grapes, and berries.

Their transportation was a horse and buggy, and my own mother remembers those rides to church and into town in what Grandma called their carriage.

Grandpa worked his land and earned the main portion of their living from the trees.

He did have a garden, and for extra income, once a week he would go into town and knock on doors and sell fresh fruit, produce and brown eggs.  My Mother remembers managing a fruit stand at their front entrance and selling produce and eggs for those who would stop by.  Everyone worked in the family.

My grandparents were married for over 50 years, and are now enjoying Heaven.

If you are looking for a mate - - may I suggest that you pray first and then be sure you are attending a good Bible believing church and are enrolled in the small group sessions.

A Christian companion will secure an undivided home!  Under all circumstances, never “settle” for someone outside of Christ!!

2 Corinthians 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
