Every Wedding has a Story

And He Swallowed His Gum a True Story from my Book "Rescue the Stories Book 2."

The background music was softly playing as the Minister, my bridegroom, and the best man stepped out to the front of the church, waiting for the rest of the wedding party to arrive.

It was evident that the best man was somewhat nervous because he was busily chomping away on a stick of gum.

My mother caught his eye and made a chewing motion with her mouth, and understanding her “sign language,” - - he promptly swallowed his gum.

“Here comes the bride,” began to play and the wedding proceeded with out any further problems at least for the ceremony.

Many weddings have a story to tell of something that went wrong on their special day.

Some are horror stories and some are simply downright humorous!

My sister had decided to play a trick on me, and when we arrived at our motel, I discovered that she had tightly sewed up my new nightgown at all the openings.

I could not contain myself and began to laugh loudly at her joke.  I told her later that she was very funny and of course I was not angry at her harmless prank.

Not so funny was the other stunt someone did to our borrowed car.  We never knew for sure who it was, but the lug bolts on one of the wheels had been loosened, which caused the wheel to almost come off.

We spent the better part of the next afternoon at the auto wrecking yard purchasing a used wheel to replace the damaged one.

Practical jokes are certainly not funny to the receiver of their brunt!  Many times they are dangerous and can seriously harm a person or a relationship.

We tried to teach our children, to never pay back each other for wrongs either true or thought to be, and not to hide or destroy the possessions of others.

1 Peter 3:9  Do not repay evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing.

Shoes for Beautiful Feet

When our youngest child was born, the doctor suggested that we purchase special shoes with a Thomas Heel for her.   Examination had shown that her toes turned inward slightly, and these shoes were ideal to assist normal growth in her ankles and legs.

The Thomas Heel, higher on the inside of the foot, caused each foot to balance and support the ankles and knees. These shoes were functional, sturdy high tops, but their overall appearance was not so beautiful.

As time went by and our daughter reached school age, it looked like the shoes had done their job.  She was excited to be able to enjoy regular school shoes that mirrored what all the other girls were wearing.

Our feet carry us everywhere and as such an important of our body, they should be well looked after. People do many things to help their feet feel better and look nicer.

I am reminded, in the Bible, about “beautiful feet” that preach the Gospel.

You have beautiful feet if you are sharing Jesus with others.  If your feet are shod with the preparation of the Gospel of Peace, you do not need to have a pulpit ministry.  You can stand anywhere in those shoes and let your light shine for our Lord.

Romans 10:15  And how shall they preach, except they be sent? As it is written, how beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things !

After School Treats
(A true story from my book Rescue the Stories, Book One.)

My elementary school was on the same street that we lived on, and although it was a long block, but we did not need to cross any streets.

When school was over, we would rush home to see what Mother had prepared for our after school treat.

I remember one day, it was fresh hot home made cinnamon rolls, but usually it was a cookie with a glass of milk.

These treats reminded me of my Mother’s love and her concern that we not famish and waste away between after school and dinner time.

I believe God is that way too, because every now and then he gives us a little taste of His Glory and our memory is jogged to understand His love for us.

Today we can sit at God’s table and drink of his life giving water, as we read and study His Word, the bread of life.  We are conscious of the fact that someday we will be with Him in heaven at the Grand Supper that He will prepare for those who love Him.

God has special treats for his children, and they are not allotted to simply “After School.”

We can partake of his Holy love, by spending time with him any day of the week, and not just on Sundays or school days.

One of Mothers favorite treats was her special Apple Cake and I share her recipe with you.

Apple Cake
3 cups chopped or sliced apples,
Cover the apples with 2 cups of sugar and set for 10 minutes.

Mix in separate bowl:  2 eggs, 1 cup oil, 1 tsp. vanilla
and add to the apples

Sift:  2 cups flour, 1 tsp. soda, 1 tsp. salt, 1 tsp. cinnamon, and add to the above.  Mix with a wooden spoon.  Add 1 cup chopped walnuts and mix well.

Oil an angel food pan, or bunt cake pan and bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.

"Blue Kettle Calamity Averted" - A True Story from my Book Three "Rescue the Stories"

We hastily departed to begin our long 175 mile trip for our doctor appointments.  The plan was to stay over night.  Generally, we returned home the same day, but this time the doctor had scheduled a follow up appointment for the next morning.  Rather than make two trips, it made more sense, to spend the night at a motel.

We had only gone a short distance down the road, when I exclaimed to my husband, I don’t believe I turned off the kettle, after I boiled the water for my tea!

My husband glared at me, “I can’t believe you would do such a thing as that; surely you must have turned it off.”

He continued, “If you really do think you left it on, you can phone our neighbor, and perhaps they can somehow get into our house, and see if it is on.”

Once my husband is set on a direction, he almost never wants to turn back for a “just in case,” scenario.  I sheepishly dropped the subject, but it doesn’t mean I put it completely out of my mind.  Silently I prayed - - - Dear Lord, please send your angels to watch over my house, amen!

After being gone a total of thirty-six hours, we arrived home the following afternoon! My husband unlocked the kitchen door, and was greeted by a frightening sight!

Fused to the burner of our electric stove, with the burner still on HIGH, the blue kettle was extremely HOT!   The kettle was badly damaged, but other than that everything else was fine.  My heart sank a little, and then suddenly I found myself bursting out loud with praise.

“Thank you Jesus, but for by the mercy, and goodness of God, our house was preserved and did not catch on fire!!”

In order to assist my forgetfulness, I have cultivated a new habit.  Now, whenever I boil water, I turn on the kitchen timer.  When it rings, the burner gets turned off!!! New habits are good, but God’s Mercy is even better!

Psalms 23:6  “Surely Goodness, and Mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

And He shall send his angels to watch over you, lest you dash your foot against a stone.
