Does God Avenge?

Do not gloat when your enemy falls; when he stumbles, do not let your heart rejoice ... -Proverbs 24:17

Years, ago our children visited another church in search of new teen age friends.  Our daughter was 17 and a boy about a year younger than her was attracted to her and they became an item.

His mother was very upset because our daughter was “older” than him and in an effort to break them up, she sent the boy away to Bible School in another State.  Our daughter wept tears of bitterness and was saddened to hear that he had married a girl he met there.

Within a year he and the girl were divorced (for some reason,) and my thoughts were perhaps the mother was not wise in manipulating her son’s future.

A similar thing happened when we moved to another city.  The boy was Greek, and although his parents loved our daughter, they wanted him to marry a Greek girl, which he did.  They had two children and he joined the family business which involved travel.  There he met a blond woman and you can guess the rest of the story.

In life there are many unjust and unfair treatments that we and others receive.

If you believe you have been mistreated and done wrong by someone, perhaps cheated, or stolen from or even abused; God forbid - - take heart for God is the avenger and he will repay.

It is best to “Let it go,” by Forgiving the one who harmed you, and then set your mind at ease and lay aside all matters of vengeance or reprisal.

Allow God to settle the scores, and you can live in peace with a good conscience.

Matthew 6:15,20-21  Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Angels Around Us

Angels often appear as human men of God.

The Bible records many wonderful appearances of angels unto Godly people, and we wonder why we do not see angels here on earth more often.

In the Old Testament, angels often appeared as men and did not look any different than everyone else. Other times they appeared with wings.  Perhaps angels have been with us, and we did not realize at times we may have seen angels unawares.

The Angel of the Lord appeared to Hagar and gave her encouragement and a prophesy in Genesis chapter 16 and also in chapter 21.

The Angel of the Lord spoke to Abraham from heaven in Genesis chapter 22.

Jacob was spoken to in a dream as an angel appeared to him.

In Exodus, Moses saw a burning bush and the Angel of the Lord spoke to him out of the fire.  Exodus 3.

As the Children of Israel left Egypt the Angel of the Lord was in the pillar of fire by night and in the cloud by day.  Exodus 14

The Angel of the Lord with a huge sword, stood in front of Balaam’s ass but only the animal could see him at first.  When Balaam whipped his donkey, the animal spoke and then God opened Balaam’s eyes to see the angel.  Numbers chapter 22

In Judges chapter 2, all the children of Israel could hear the Angel speak.

Judges 6, the Angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, but he thought it was a man.  The angel instructed him to place a sacrifice on some stones, and when the angel caused the sacrifice to be consumed by fire Gideon realized the person was indeed an angel.

What a story in Judges 13 when the Angel of the Lord appeared to Hannah she though he was a man of God and told her husband.  When the Angel appeared to Manoah her husband, the Angel also caused fire to consume a sacrifice.  Manoah asked, “What is your name?”   The angel replied, “Why do you ask seeing my name is secret?”

The Angel of the Lord appeared to Elijah in I Kings 19 and instructed him.  Again in

2 Kings chapter 1, and 2 Kings 19 the Angel won the battle over the enemies.

I Chronicles 21, King David saw the Angel of the Lord with his sword stretched out over Jerusalem, and David and all the elders fell on their faces before God.

The Angel of the Lord shut the lion’s mouths when Daniel was cast into the lions den. Daniel 6

The Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary announcing she was chosen to bear the Messiah.

Understand that because angels often look like anyone else, you may have indeed seen angels many times.

One thing to remember is that regardless of what we see with our natural eyes, there are always angels from God, around us protecting and guiding us.

Psalms 34:7  The angel of the LORD encamps round about them that fear him, and he delivers them from destruction.

Asking Permission  (A true Story)

There was a step that Robert was not anxious to go forward with, but it needed to be done.

He had to ask my father’s permission to marry me.

Prior to coming to this point there was someone else that he needed to ask permission.  He needed to ask my Heavenly Father if he could marry me.

It seemed like he was gone a long time as he went into the church to pray.  I waited in the car for him to come back.

Soon he returned with a look of joy on his face.  He said to me, “I told God I was willing to give you up, if it was not His will, but God said, I can have you.”

I don’t know why I hadn’t prayed about this.  Probably because I just took it for granted that God had brought me Robert, and that was it.

Now it was time for Robert to face my earthly father.  My dad had already told me that he could probably get Bobby a job on the railroad, which would be a steady income instead of the sporadic roofing work he was doing.  In those days we called him Bobby.

I told Bobby, please be kind but refuse to accept the railroad job, because it would mean working evenings and Sundays and missing church.

All went well, and my Dad was happy to have Bobby take me off his hands.   He agreed to walk me down the aisle and to help with the finances for the wedding.

The first few years for Bobby and I, was a financial struggle.  I remember once borrowing a dollar from my mother so I could purchase some hamburger.  I was so embarrassed when I paid her back that I vowed never to ask my parents for money again.

Bob went through the roofing apprentice program, and took what ever work was available.

Some of the older roofers knew Bob would hold his own and carry them too, by taking the most of the work; so they would request that he also be hired.

One of the contractors noticed how fast and experienced Bob was and offered him a permanent job.  When it rained, they did repairs or worked on the boss’s cabin.

Later his boss helped us go into business for ourselves and times were not always easy but God was our partner and supplier.

As you approach new decisions in life, it is a good thing to ask your Heavenly Father’s permission and direction, then follow the steps he desires you to take.

Ain’t Got No Mama!

She viewed me coming down the aisle to pick up my repaired hearing aid.  “Come into my office,” said my friend, the middle aged, Hearing Specialist.

I noticed she was fidgeting with a lonely button and a sewing kit, as she explained.  “I just purchased this sweater vest, and a minute ago one of the buttons fell off.  I can’t get one of the needles threaded to fix it.”

Restlessly she opened the sewing kit and moved about the many needles inside a small box.  Almost frantically she said, “Is this the needle threader?  I can’t make it work.”

As I reached out to select a needle, she handed me the threading gadget.

Carefully, I inserted the threader into the eye of the needle, and showed her how to pass the thread through and then gently pull it into the needle.

Quickly I picked up the button and proceeded to reattach it to her sweater.

“You need your mama,” I said to her.

Her response surprised me when she replied; “Hazel I never had a mama.  My birth mother did not want me or my sister, so my grandma raised us our early years, and she was mean to us.  Later I went to live with my dad, and my step mother was uncaring and hateful to me.”

I answered, “So you did not have a mother figure to be a good role model and to show you love?”

She replied, “That is true.”

I told her, “Well, I love you,” as I reached out and gave her a hug, and she hugged back.

As she handed me my package, she said, “Those three women really missed out, because I have gone on to make something of myself, and I am also proud of my adult children.”

In life not all children are fortunate to have a good relationship with their mother, (or their father) even those still living at home.

I think back at the many times I failed as a mother to be patient and kind to my own children.  Today, I am thankful that my children have forgiven me.

Jesus gave explicit instructions about children and those who abuse and harm the little ones.  He said, “It would be better that a millstone was hanged around their neck and they were cast into the sea.”

Now that seems a bit harsh, but Jesus did not take kindly to the mistreatment of children.

Paul instructed Fathers not to tease and aggravate their children and cause them to be angry.

Ephesians  6:4  And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

I am reminded that Paul also said children were to obey and honor their parents, and give them respect.

How is everything at your home this day?
